The New Jersey Devils have finally shared an official update on the status of star forward Jack Hughes.

As everyone expected the news is pretty bad with Hughes now expected to be out "week to week" but a number of National Hockey League insiders believe the Devils are relieved at this news. That suggests that there was a belief that things could have been much worse, and it sounds like Hughes has avoided the worst case scenario despite the fact that he will still miss significant time.

It's very unfortunate news for both Hughes and for hockey fans who were enjoying the scorching hot start that Hughes was having this season. The young Devils star was off to one of the hottest starts in the NHL while averaging 2 points per game with 5 goals and 15 assists over his first 10 games of the season.

There's no telling just how much of an impact this injury will have on the momentum he had built up for himself up until this point in the season, but it seems almost certain that there will be some impact with such an extended absence expected.

Stay tuned for more on this developing story.
