Whoa! A huge move that has been speculated for a long time now.
This just in, the New Jersey Devils are reportedly trading former 2nd overall selection Simon Nemec to the Calgary Flames.
And buckle up Flames fans because this is a whopper of a trade...
From NHL insider Elliotte Friedman
The Flames acquire Nemec and Tsyplakov for two 1st round picks, a 2nd round pick and Etienne Morin.
Look... I think Nemec is an intriguing young player but that's a HIGH price to pay for a player who hasn't really established himself at the NHL level just yet.
There have been reports for well over a calendar year now that Nemec was seeking a change of scenery given his place on the Devils' depth chart. He'll no doubt receive a bump in playing time with the Flames, but I pray it works out for both sides because this has all the makings of a risky move.
Nemec's time with the Devils always felt like it should have worked out better than it did.
Drafted second overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, Nemec arrived in North America carrying the kind of expectations that come with being viewed as a future franchise defenseman. The Slovak blueliner possessed all the tools teams look for in a modern NHL defenseman: elite skating, outstanding puck-moving ability, strong hockey IQ, and the confidence to play in all situations. For a while, it looked like the Devils had found yet another cornerstone piece for their young core.
Instead, the relationship gradually became more complicated.
As New Jersey pushed into win-now mode over the last several seasons, Nemec found himself battling for ice time on a crowded blue line. Veterans were often given preference, and despite flashes of brilliance whenever he got an opportunity, Nemec never seemed to secure the permanent top-four role many expected. Rumors of frustration began to circulate, with reports suggesting the young defenseman wanted a larger role and a clearer path to becoming the player he believed he could be. While neither side publicly escalated the situation, the whispers about a potential trade request never completely disappeared.
Eventually, something had to give.
Now, Nemec gets exactly what he was looking for after being traded to the Calgary Flames.
For Calgary, this is the type of move that could accelerate the franchise's rebuilding process in a significant way. The Flames have spent the last few years accumulating young talent and draft capital, and Nemec instantly becomes one of the organization's most important building blocks. He's still just entering the prime years of his career, and Calgary can offer something New Jersey couldn't: opportunity.
Instead of fighting for minutes behind established veterans, Nemec will arrive in Calgary with every chance to become the centerpiece of the Flames' defense corps. The organization has made it clear that its future will be built around young players, and Nemec fits that vision perfectly.
From the Devils' perspective, the trade closes the book on a talented player whose development never quite aligned with the team's competitive timeline. It isn't necessarily a loss for either side. Sometimes a player simply needs a fresh start, and few players in the NHL seemed to need one more than Nemec.
The pressure will now shift from proving he belongs in the lineup to proving he can become the star many projected him to be when he was selected second overall.
For the Flames, it's a gamble worth taking.
For Nemec, it's exactly the fresh start he was looking for.
