Did coach Guy Boucher's arrogance cost game 5?
Keystone press agency

Following an humiliating 7-0 defeat against the Penguins, the Senators are under a lot of pressure to right the ship going into a sudden death game 6. A lot can be said about the defensive system used or how the Ottawa's attack was nonexistent today. However, one very compelling argument is the lack of practice by the Sens following Guy Boucher's doctrine.

Boucher told the whole world how he thought at this point in the season, practices were unnecessary and how rest does a better job preparing the players. He's not the only coach going along the same direction, as Coach Quenneville is known to do the same thing with the Blackhawks. However, nuances seem to be lacking with the Sens strategy.

A lot of players are injured at this point and it's okay to give them a rest. Thing is, the Power Play is really not doing well for the Sens and the defensive system seems to be cracking. During game 4, the Pens took an early 3-0 lead and only a late two goals by the Sens brought some hope. Today, the 7-0 shutout proves how things must be tidied up.

Boucher was asked about the practices during the post-game press conference and he shut down the question pretty quickly. He told the reporter it was not a smart question to ask and move on. This kind of arrogance might cost the Playoff to the Sens, as the team is breaking apart and coach Boucher is not on record saying he will change strategy. It served the team well thus far, but as with great military leaders in history, you need to modify your approach according to reality.

This one will be an interesting story to follow!
