It has been almost a full year now since Vegas Golden Knights star forward Mitch Marner made the decision to leave his former team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, but despite all that time it is still obvious that the animosity caused by that decision is still very real.

On Sunday night, Marner and the Golden Knights defeated the Colorado Avalanche in a huge comeback victory in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final, taking a commanding 3-0 lead that gives them a stranglehold on the series and a clear path to the Stanley Cup Final. It was an impressive feat given that the Golden Knights had given up the first 3 goals of the game, all of which came in the very first period, coming back from down 0-3 in Game 3 to win by a score of 5-3.

It was an impressive comeback so naturally the players on the Golden Knights roster were asked about how they managed the incredible feat, with the aforementioned Marner being one of the players who was asked to provide an explanation.

While Marner gave a good answer to the question, many took it as a shot at some of his former teammates, most notably Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews and Maple Leafs star forward William Nylander.

"I think we have an older group as well that just stays patient and stays calm," said Marner. "We don't turn on each other, we don't get mad at each other. We know everyone is trying to do their best out there every single shift."

While those may not seem like comments specific to either Matthews or Nylander, fans in Toronto quickly connected them to a highly controversial incident that had occurred between Marner, Matthews and Nylander during a playoff run with the Maple Leafs.

Fans were quick to comment on the fact that they felt Marner was talking about his former teammates.

As you might imagine there were a few very heated responses to the comments from Marner as well, with the former Maple Leaf igniting a firestorm on social media whether intentionally or not.

Was Marner taking a shot at his former teammates? Let me know your thoughts on this latest controversy in the comments.
