Did William Nylander just admit the Leafs are tanking?

Toronto’s woes continue. The Maple Leafs are now losers of eight straight games since the Olympic break, struggling to regain the form that carried them to nine consecutive playoff appearances.

William Nylander, the only Leaf to score last night against the Canadiens in Montreal, offered a revealing glimpse into the team’s mindset. “At the beginning there out from the break, there’s a lot of frustration and everything,” Nylander said. “But now, I mean, it’s not going to help being frustrated. And so, I think the mood in the locker room has changed a little bit. And I think that’s made it a better environment for everybody.”

The subtle shift in dressing room tone raises eyebrows. Is it a sign that the Leafs are quietly acknowledging the value of a high draft pick, rather than purely chasing wins this season? Missing the playoffs after nearly a decade of consistent postseason hockey would be a major shock to Toronto fans—but it could also be a one-off opportunity to reset. These points were raised by Luke Fox of Sportsnet.

Nylander hinted at the uncertainty, his thought left unfinished: “I mean, I sure hope that that’s the case, for sure. Otherwise…” The ellipsis speaks volumes.

As Toronto works to find stability on and off the ice, every game feels like a test: not just for the players, but for management’s strategy moving forward. Could the Leafs be leaning into a longer-term plan, all while trying to maintain team morale in the present?

The coming weeks will tell whether this losing streak is a temporary slump…or the beginning of a more strategic, if painful, rebuild.
