Disturbing past of Johnny Gaudreau's killer revealed.

This terrible tragedy could have been avoided if only people had done their jobs in the past.

An extremely disturbing detail regarding the man who stands accused of killing brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau this week, allegedly while behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, has emerged.

As time has gone on more and more details have begun to emerge about Sean M. Higgins, including a military past in which he earned the rank of Major. According to the Daily Mail, Higgins is a field artillery officer assigned to the New Jersey Armed National Guard, working part time as a traditional Drill Status Guardsman. Higgins previously served in the 44th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Kosovo.

Although Higgins' military background is commendable, it will do nothing to diminish the horrible results of his actions this week, especially not when you consider the fact that Higgins had previously been gifted a golden opportunity to reform his ways.

The father of two has previously been in trouble with the law as a result of his alcohol consumption with court records indicating that Higgins was previously arrested for Driving While Intoxicated back in 2005 in North Carolina. Unfortunately, Higgins was able to walk free from that charge when the charges were voluntarily dismissed after the officer involved did not show up to court.

It is hard not to think of how things could have been different if Higgins had been forced to face the consequences of his actions all those years ago.

It makes the loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau all the more infuriating as well, with Higgins having been given a once-in-a-lifetime kind of opportunity to get out of legal trouble only to find himself back in the exact same kind of trouble 19 years later.

This time the consequences for Higgins will be much more severe.
