Dominik Hasek rips into US Speaker of the House Mike Johnson

Hockey Hall of Famer Dominik Hasek refuses to "stick to sports".

Hasek has never been particularly shy about sharing his opinions, but in recent years the Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender has become increasingly outspoken when it comes to Donald Trump and his administration. Hasek’s criticism has been closely tied to one issue above all else: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and what he views as Trump’s willingness to treat Vladimir Putin too softly.

That position has put Hasek firmly at odds with Trump’s approach to the war. When Trump met with Putin in Alaska in August 2025, Hasek blasted the American president, calling him the “weakest president” and arguing that the warm reception given to Putin effectively rewarded a leader responsible for the invasion of Ukraine.

Hasek has also been highly critical of Trump’s treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the broader direction of American foreign policy. The Trump administration's decisions to pressure Ukraine toward negotiations, while temporarily cutting military and intelligence support, represented a dramatic shift in U.S. policy and became a major source of concern for Hasek.

His concerns extend beyond Ukraine, too. Hasek has warned that Trump’s political rhetoric could threaten democratic institutions, even suggesting that Americans should remain vigilant about the possibility of Trump attempting to remain in power beyond his constitutional limits.

For a former NHL superstar who once spent his career stopping pucks rather than making political headlines, Hasek has certainly found a second act as one of hockey's most outspoken political voices. Whether people agree with him or not, he clearly has no intention of staying quiet when it comes to Trump, Putin or the war in Ukraine.
