The Court of Arbitration for Sport delivered a seismic ruling on Friday, compelling the IIHF to reinstate Russia in all upcoming international hockey tournaments effective immediately. The decision reverses years of exclusion that began after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. But the loudest response did not come from a federation or a government. It came from a retired goaltender who has made this fight deeply personal.

Dominik Hasek, the legendary Czech netminder and Hockey Hall of Famer, fired off a post on X within hours of the ruling. Hasek questioned whether any democratic country in the world would willingly host what he described as advertising for Russia's war. He called for immediate rules and laws to prevent it, warning that the consequences could be measured in human lives.

"We must not allow this!" Hasek wrote.

The post quickly gained traction, though Hasek's reaction is far from surprising. The 62-year-old has spent years as one of the most outspoken critics of Russia's influence in professional hockey, repeatedly targeting Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin and his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Earlier in October, Hasek accused the Capitals of exploiting Ovechkin's children during a pregame ceremony and challenged Canadian lawmakers to ban Ovechkin from entering the country.

The CAS ruling itself has created a firestorm of logistical and political complications. The IIHF said it "disagrees" with the decision but will comply. Germany, which is set to host the men's World Championship, has pushed back through its hockey federation chairman Frank H. Lutz, who cited "significant security, political and financial consequences."

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Ukraine qualified for the men's Worlds for the first time in two decades. Displacing a qualified team to accommodate Russia would risk enormous backlash.

Russia could potentially return as early as the 2027 World Junior Championship in Edmonton, now just 57 days away. The NHL and NHLPA, according to Darren Dreger, have no set timeline on whether Russia will be included as the eighth team in the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, though both sides acknowledge "the sooner, the better" on reaching a decision.

Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyaryov celebrated the ruling, writing on Telegram that CAS had validated the Russian Hockey Federation's position.

The political and sporting battle lines are drawn, and Hasek has made it clear which side he stands on.
