It's been a week now since the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that they'd hired former Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving in the same capacity, filling the role that was vacated with the highly publicized termination of Kyle Dubas.

Treliving faces a long road ahead of him with what direction to take the franchise, including what moves to make with the "Core 4" of John Tavares, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander. Meanwhile, several players are set to become free agents and will need new deals. He has his work cut out for him, no doubt.

But is he the right man for the job? Not according to former NHL head coach and Hockey Night in Canada host Don Cherry, who now hosts an eponymous podcast. In Cherry's view, the Leafs made a mistake with Treliving and should have hired Mark and Dale Hunter instead; with the former taking over as GM and the latter replacing Sheldon Keefe on the bench.

Speaking on a recent episode of his podcast, Cherry had this to say:

"The Leafs should get Mark Hunter and Dale as coach. Give it a shot, Mark Hunter, London Knights, they never rebuild, they only re-load, they lost in the finals this year... when Dubas was in the Soo, Mark Hunter won the OHL Championship but lost the Memorial Cup Finals, then the next year won the OHL Championship... 2013-14 they hosted the Memorial Cup, 2016 they won the Memorial Cup, and 2020 he wins the World Juniors. They've been in the Memorial Cup 5 times since Mark and Dale took over."

As you may remember, Mark Hunter was once an employee of the Leafs, serving as director of player personnel and later co-interim general manager. Meanwhile, Dale Hunter's only foray into coaching in the NHL wasn't ideal, as he lasted one year behind the bench of the Washington Capitals before departing.
