On Christmas Day, Don Cherry posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, a picture of himself and a huge turkey, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas along with some encouraging for Team Canada ahead of the Wold Junior championship.

Upon the publication, the host of The Locked On Senators Podcast Ross Levitan commented on the fact that, despite his controversial exit from Hockey Night in Canada, it was absurd that Cherry was “not already in the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Builder category.”

This is surely a bold statement to say when you remember what Cherry did to get fired from Rogers.

On November 9th of 2019, Cherry spoke about the tradition of wearing poppies in Canada honors the country’s war dead on Remembrance Day, but derided immigrants by saying, “You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”

Many fans therefore reminded Levitan, and other fans who support the idea of putting Grapes in the HHOF, what the opinionated hockey commentator did and put him down with comments and heartfelt experiences of his rant.

“Don Cherry had his time. Way back when. I get how, for those who haven’t heard that rant a thousand times, in a thousand ways, from a thousand people, he can bring back a nostalgia for a simpler time.

But immortalizing him, is immortalizing that rant.”

Here are a few reactions from fans that got Cherry trending on X on Wednesday:
