The Toronto Maple Leafs may have something of a growing cap concern on their hands.
The Leafs took a gamble coming into this season when they opted not to extend goaltender Jack Campbell in spite of the fact that he seemed poised to be the team's starter, a gamble that so far does not appear to be paying off. Not only has Campbell looked solid to start the regular season but the Leafs other goaltender, Petr Mrazek, has been a non factor due to the fact that injuries have kept him on the sidelines. Just earlier today the Leafs confirmed Mrazek would be out for a while, only compounding the issue for the organization.
In 10 appearances Campbell now has a very solid 1.88 goals against average and a .936 save percentage and there is growing concern that the price tag on a Campbell extension is skyrocketing with every game that goes by.
On the most recent episode of his podcast, veteran National Hockey League analyst Don Cherry stated his belief that the Leafs must sign Campbell and do so qucikly.
"They should sign him quick," said Cherry on the podcast. "They should sign him."
Not only did Cherry implore the Leafs to sign Campbell to a new deal, he also went a step further and predicted that the Leafs' front office will do just that. Cherry believes that general manager Kyle Dubas will have a new deal worked out with Campbell within the month.
"I'll make a prediction that they'll sign him within 3 weeks to a month because he just keeps getting better and better," added the former NHL head coach.
The price tag on an extension has undoubtedly gone up already this season but whether or not that will prove to be enough of a pressure point on Kyle Dubas to get a deal done mid season has yet to be determined. The fact that the Leafs just signed the aforementioned Petr Mrazek to a 3 year contract that carries a cap hit of $3.8 million per season will complicate matters, unless they can find a suitable trade for Mrazek who has a 10 team no trade clause. That is even more the case given the recent news regarding Mrazek and his injury.
