Don Cherry sets the record straight on his future in emotional interview.
Toronto Sun

The end of Don Cherry's era on the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast may be in the not too distant future, but it certainly will not be happening anytime soon in the present.

A few weeks ago veteran Toronto reporter Steve Simmons published an article for the Toronto Sun in which he strongly hinted at the fact that this could be the end of the road for Cherry on the HNIC broadcast. Simmons did not explicitly state that Cherry had been released but he did state that Cherry's contract had not been renewed, and then linked it to the recent firing of Sportsnet radio legend Bob McCown.

From Simmonds:

One thing that hasn’t been confirmed for the next season of Hockey Night In Canada: the return of Don Cherry and Coach’s Corner. Rogers is cutting all over the place, which included the removal of Bob McCown on radio and television and Doug MacLean doing the same. Cherry is handsomely compensated for his work. Not sure if this is a place they want to go with the 85-year-old.

It was a comment buried at the bottom of a column that was largely focused on the goings on in the National Basketball Association but it caused a firestorm on social media. The belief that Cherry had either been released or would be released from his contract caused a ton of anger and backlash against Rogers and the Candian Broadcasting Corporation, but as it turns out it was all a whole lot of nothing from Simmons and the Toronto Sun.

Cherry has since taken to social media himself and not only has he refuted the report from Simmons, but he has gone above and beyond to express how hurt, angry and disappointed he has been in a man he calls his friend. Of course a short message on social media is not always the best way to express your feelings or thoughts on something, but thankfully we don't have to rely on just that from Cherry.

In a very interesting turn of events Cherry has given an interview to the Toronto Sun, the publication that originally published Simmons' article, and in that interview he was extremely candid. A noticeably emotional Cherry effectively buries Simmons and discusses his future at length which you can see in the video below.
