The Washington Capitals had a tough choice to make, but ended up placing defenseman Vincent Iorio on waivers on Wednesday.

While the Caps had high hopes for Iorio, the blue liner served as a healthy scratch for Washington’s first four games of the 2024-25 season, so it’s not surprising to see him on waivers.

But the young defenseman remains impressive. He’s won two Calder Cups with the Hershey Bears in the AHL, where he is expected to be headed back, unless he gets claimed off waivers before tomorrow’s deadline.

He had five goals and 20 points in 67 regular-season outings with Hershey in 2024-25, along with a plus/minus of minus-4 while mainly logging top-4 minutes.

His puck-moving ability and two-way play make him a solid asset and he could find a taker before Thursday.

If not, I’m sure he will be able to impress the Capitals as the season unfolds and get another crack at the main roster.

In other waiver news, the Florida Panthers made a claim on Wednesday.
