On Tuesday, Paul Statsny came off the free agency board, signing one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.

While Statsny’s contract is truly a deal for the Canes, Cap Friendly has revealed that the veteran forward has the chance to get his hands on a $500k performance bonus for winning the Stanley Cup! The deal also holds a no-Trade Clause.

While this is a very lucrative bonus, Statsny will need to hoist the Stanley Cup to get paid.

The contract he inked in Raleigh is less than what he previously cashed in: he was coming off a one-year, $3.75 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets. Last season, Stastny had 21 goals and 24 assists in 71 games.

Sure, the Canes will be contender. They ave been quite busy this offseason, and get great offensive support in Statsny after acquiring Max Pacioretty, from the Vegas Golden Knights, who is injured. Statsny is also a good insurance addition seeing that Jesperi Kotkaniemi could struggle to live up to his $4.8 million-AAV contract, which takes effect this coming season.

However, they struggled away from home last spring during the postseason and will need to get wins on their rivals’ turfs if they want to be Stanley Cup champions and if Statsny wants to get that special bonus.

The 36-year-old forward has 800 points (284 goals, 516 assists) in 1,072 career NHL games with Colorado, St. Louis, Winnipeg and Vegas, eclipsing the 40-point mark in 12 of his 16 seasons. He was originally selected by Colorado in the second round, 44th overall, of the 2005 NHL Draft.
