Dougie Hamilton’s trade saga has taken an unexpected turn just as the NHL trade deadline approaches. The veteran defenseman remains at the center of speculation, but recent developments may be cooling the urgency for a move.

Chris Johnston of TSN hinted on the Chris Johnston Show that while Hamilton isn’t off the table, the injury to Luke Hughes may have shifted the Devils’ priorities. “Not a case where he’s removed from trade discussions, but I get the sense that maybe there’s a little less urgency,” Johnston said.

Hamilton, who has two years remaining on his $9 million-per-season contract, also controls much of his own fate thanks to a 10-team no-trade list. Over the past few weeks, both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes have been linked as potential landing spots for the veteran blueliner, while it’s been previously reported that he’s blocked a trade to the San Jose Sharks.

However, with Hughes now on long-term injured reserve after a collision with Flames forward Justin Kirkland last Monday, the Devils may be focused on stabilizing their roster while having to mend their relationship with Hamilton after all the trade buzz.

Hamilton could become more valuable to the team staying put rather than moving, and the timing couldn’t be more complicated for all parties involved.

The situation leaves both the Devils and Hamilton in a delicate balancing act: weighing roster needs, trade potential, and team chemistry, all while the clock ticks toward the deadline. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Hamilton remains in New Jersey or finally makes a blockbuster move elsewhere.
