We have a huge trade rumor from one of hockey's very best insiders.

TSN insider Darren Dreger is now reporting that the Carolina Hurricanes are actively shopping defenseman Ryan Murphy and furthermore Dreger adds that he believes "the 23-year-old, right-shot defenceman will likely be on the move."

It's a nothing short of a bombshell, a highly touted right-handed shot defenseman in this league is incredibly valuable, and there is no doubt that a huge number of teams will be jumping at the opportunity to acquire Murphy. The fact that he is currently earning just $750,000 this year, and has another year on his deal where he will come in at a cap hit of $825,000, will only add to that value. For playoff contenders that have limited cap space, but need quality help on the blue line, this is a golden opportunity, and an extremely rare one at that.

Dreger did not touch on what teams are currently involved in talks with the Hurricanes, however you can expect the usual suspects will be all over this. The two teams who have been most aggressive in their pursuit of defense this season have been the Detroit Red Wings and the Boston Bruins, and while this is merely speculation, you can be sure both of those names are somewhere near the top of the list.
