The veteran defenseman insists this is the reason why he should represent Canada at the 2026 Olympics.
Drew Doughty is a good salesman. As Team Canada’s roster announcement approaches, the veteran defenseman made it clear why he believes he deserves a spot: he thrives under pressure, he told in a powerful interview with Sportsnet:
“When people are excluding me from that list, in my head I’m like, ‘I don’t understand how at all they could be doing that,’” Doughty told Sportsnet from the Los Angeles Kings’ practice facility. “I mean, I am old, but man, I’m still playing at a high level. I’m still playing the most minutes on my team… I know how to do that. I’ve done it before. The pressure is not going to get to me. S— doesn’t faze me.”
For 18 seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, Doughty has been logging heavy minutes in all the key situations, proving his durability and clutch performance. While he acknowledges he’s no longer a young phenom, he emphasizes the value of experience.
“You need older guys… who can play in those moments, and I know how to do that,” he added.
Now, Doughty sits and waits, confident that his track record and mental toughness make him an asset for Canada on the international stage.
As fans debate who should make the squad, Doughty’s candid, almost sales-pitch-like declaration is sure to turn heads and maybe even sway some opinions.
Whether Hockey Canada listens or not, one thing is clear: Doughty isn’t backing down, and he expects to be there when the roster is unveiled on Dec. 31.
