Dubas cleans house, makes sweeping changes in Pittsburgh.
The new president of hockey operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins wasted little time in putting his stamp on the organization.
The Fenway Sports Group and the Pittsburgh Penguins pulled off a major coup this week when they scooped up arguably the hottest front office free agent in the National Hockey League, Kyle Dubas, and made him their president of hockey operations for the foreseeable future.
Dubas was a big acquisition for the Penguins, who reportedly put their search for a GM on hold when Dubas became available, and they have entrusted him with a great deal of power by giving him such a big role, power that Dubas is already showing he is very comfortable wielding.
According to a report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, Dubas immediately went to work after being hired by the Penguins by making sweeping changes to the organization. Dubas fired three members of the Penguins personnel, and somewhat unsurprisingly all of them were connected to former Penguins general manager Ron Hextall.
According to Seravalli, director of hockey strategy Alec Schall, senior vice president of sports science and performance Teena Murray and director of pro scouting Kerry Huffman were all fired on Thursday, the very same day that Dubas himself was hired. In fact the insider describes the moves as one of Dubas' "first orders of business."
Hextall's tenure as GM was not a popular one among the Penguins faithful so Dubas' moves here will likely be very well received.
