Dylan Larkin expands trade list in major breakthrough for Red Wings

The Dylan Larkin trade saga has been one of the most frustrating storylines of the offseason for the Detroit Red Wings. For weeks, the club has been stuck in a painful loop, unable to find a partner willing to meet their asking price among the handful of teams Larkin was willing to join. On Friday however, a new report suggests the veteran center may finally be loosening the reins on his no-movement clause.

According to Elliotte Friedman on the latest edition of 32 Thoughts, Larkin is now open to being traded to more than the three teams that were originally reported. Friedman believes Larkin's list of acceptable destinations has grown to approximately eight clubs.

Among the new names reportedly in play are the Colorado Avalanche, Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars, and Tampa Bay Lightning. Those additions represent a significant shift, as earlier reports had painted Larkin's preferences as limited to the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, and Florida Panthers.

Friedman also noted that he does not believe any Canadian teams are on Larkin's expanded list. The common thread among his preferred destinations, according to the report, is that Larkin wants to land with a team he views as a legitimate contender.

The expanded list could prove crucial in breaking a standoff that has dragged on for weeks. Detroit's asking price has reportedly been too steep for the original group of preferred teams, leaving the Red Wings without a viable trade partner. Adding clubs like Colorado and Washington, both of which carry significant roster talent and playoff ambitions, could create new pathways to a deal.

The situation had grown increasingly awkward in recent days. The Philadelphia Flyers reportedly made an inquiry about Larkin, only to be immediately shut down by his camp, according to Kevin Kurz of The Athletic. Philadelphia simply was not on the list. Similar roadblocks have reportedly kept other interested organizations, including Montreal, from even getting to the negotiating table.

With roughly eight teams now reportedly in the mix, the math changes. More suitors means more competition, and more competition could push one of those clubs to finally meet what the Red Wings are looking for.

Larkin remains on the ice in Detroit, without the C on his chest, and nothing appears imminent. But the expanded trade list is the most encouraging development in this saga in some time, and it could be the catalyst that finally gets a deal across the finish line.
