Dylan Larkin gets brutal reality check from the Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings are standing their ground.

It has become a trend around the National Hockey League for elite level athletes to use the no-movement clauses included in their contracts to force their teams into unfavorable trades, but it doesn't sound like the Red Wings have any intention of serving as yet another example of this trend.

In a recent interview, Red Wings insider Helene St. James revealed that the Red Wings are prepared to go down the difficult path of keeping Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin under contract for the foreseeable future, this in spite of the fact that Larkin's request for a trade has now gone public.

"I think he's gonna have to expand [his list]" said St. James on the Jason Gregor Show. "It's the middle of July and the Wings haven't gotten anything that they needed from those teams."

St. James went so far as to question the decision for a trade request at all on the part of Larkin, arguing that there was never going to be a scenario in which this could work.

"This is what I have a hard time understanding, did Dylan Larkin not think this through?" asked St. James. "I don't understand how he didn't know that they basically needed somebody just like him back."

That paints a picture where Larkin would have to come back and play for the Red Wings next season, a scenario that could be extremely ugly given how well this trade request has been received internally inside of the Red Wings organization.

"From their perspective I can tell you that organization is extremely upset," revealed St. James. "He signed for an 8 year deal, that was front loaded, they paid him."

In fact the Red Wings might be so upset about this trade request that it may actually be motivating them to force the player to return.

"That's why they are like 'We'll make you come play for us, we'll make you decide in September what you're gonna do' the worst thing Dylan could do is not report," said St. James.

It sounds very much like Larkin may have overplayed his hand, and now has no good options remaining.

"This is one of those things that's like, did he overestimate his value?" wondered St. James. "I just don't understand how he didn't maybe realize what the Wings would want in return for trading him."

It sounds like the Red Wings are ready to play hard ball, and that means bad news for Dylan Larkin.
