Dylan Larkin gives Red Wings another reason to worry as trade drama intensifies

According to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Larkin has not wavered from the trade request he submitted shortly after the season concluded on April 15. Larkin wants out, and nothing that has happened since has altered that stance.

Some around the league had speculated that Yzerman's departure might shift the dynamic. The thinking went that if the general manager Larkin had grown frustrated with was gone, perhaps the relationship could be repaired. Others even floated the idea that Yzerman's firing may have been partly motivated by a desire to convince Larkin to stay.

Neither theory appears to hold any weight at this point.

The situation is further complicated by what sources describe as genuine frustration from the organization itself. Reports suggest the Red Wings view Larkin's desire to leave as a betrayal, particularly given the front-loaded financial structure of his contract. The sense within the front office is that the captain received favorable terms and is now walking away from his end of the bargain.

Meanwhile, the trade market remains frozen. Detroit has reportedly set an extremely high asking price, seeking a first-line center in return. No general manager has been willing to meet that demand, and Larkin's no-trade clause limits the pool of potential destinations even further. The combination of a restricted list and steep cost has created a total deadlock.

With training camp approaching and no deal materializing, the most likely scenario is becoming an uncomfortable one. Larkin may have to walk back into a locker room where every teammate knows he tried to leave. The potential impact on chemistry and morale is significant, and the awkwardness of a captain leading a group he publicly attempted to depart from would be difficult to ignore.

For a player who spent more than a decade with a franchise that never reached the postseason during his tenure, the frustration is understandable. But the Red Wings have shown no willingness to lower their price, and Larkin has shown no willingness to reconsider.
