Things just got even spicier in Detroit.
Things just got even spicier in Detroit.
By now just about everyone who follows the sport of hockey has heard of the stunning trade request made by Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin, with plenty of speculation about the ugly reasons why this has happened as well, but new details are now emerging that indicate the Red Wings captain has put his soon-to-be former team in a very difficult position.
Not only has the news of this trade demand getting out put Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman in a relatively weak position from which to make a trade, but a new report from Red Wings insider Helen St. James is now indicating that Larkin has limited Yzerman's options to just 3 teams. It will come as no surprise that each and every one of the team's on Larkin's list is currently considered a Stanley Cup contender and appears poised to continue to be in the coming season.
Here they are in no particular order:
Florida Panthers
It comes as no surprise at all that Larkin wants a taste of what the Panthers have experienced over the last two seasons with back to back Stanley Cup championships. Not only has Larkin never had the chance to even be in a Stanley Cup Final, but he hasn't had a taste of the Stanley Cup playoffs since his rookie season in Detroit.
It likely comes as no coincidence either that Team USA teammate Matthew Tkachuk is currently a member of the Florida Panthers, with both men winning an Olympic Gold Medal together earlier this year.
Minnesota Wild
Although they have not experienced the success of the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Wild look very much like a team that will be a threat to contend for the Stanley Cup for several seasons to come. The recent acquisition of Quinn Hughes has given them a serious threat on the blue line and the addition of Larkin at center could be exactly what the Wild need to take that next step.
Once again I believe it is no coincidence at all that two of Larkin's Team USA teammates are members of the Wild, with Larkin having won Olympic gold with both the aforementioned Quinn Hughes and Wild defenseman Brock Faber in Italy.
Vegas Golden Knights
The Vegas Golden Knights are currently leading in the Stanley Cup Final so it's not very difficult at all to see why Larkin would want to join the highly successful expansion franchise. Since entering the National Hockey League, the Golden Knights have been a consistent threat to contend for a Stanley Cup championship and have effectively been the polar opposite of the Red Wings during that span.
As with the two previous instances I believe it comes as no coincidence that Larkin was in Italy winning a Gold Medal alongside Golden Knights star forward Jack Eichel and star defenseman Noah Hanifin during their time together with Team USA.
Seeing as all of these teams are perennial contenders though means they do not have particularly deep prospect pools for the Red Wings to potentially pry value from. What may have already been a nightmare situation for Yzerman might have just gotten that much worse.
