It has been roughly two months since Dylan Larkin formally requested a trade out of Detroit, and yet the Red Wings captain remains firmly on the roster.

General manager Steve Yzerman has reportedly been unable to secure a return package enticing enough to part with his top center. Yzerman is said to be seeking players who can contribute immediately rather than prospects or draft picks.

But the bigger obstacle might be Larkin himself.

According to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Larkin has not added any teams to his original three-team trade list. The 29-year-old holds a full no-movement clause in his contract, giving him complete control over where he ends up next.

That list reportedly consists of the Florida Panthers, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Minnesota Wild.

Here is the problem: none of those three clubs currently have the salary cap space required to absorb Larkin's $8.7 million annual cap hit. That financial reality, paired with the extremely limited destination pool, has essentially handcuffed Yzerman in trade negotiations.

Larkin's frustration is understandable. Since breaking into the league with Detroit in 2015-2016, he has appeared in the playoffs just once. His trade demand was driven by a desire to join a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.

His production certainly warrants that ambition. Larkin has strung together five consecutive 30-goal seasons with the Red Wings. This past campaign, he potted 34 goals and added 33 assists for 67 points across 74 games.

Still, a short and inflexible trade list paired with a hefty salary creates a near-impossible puzzle for Detroit's front office. Unless one of the three named teams finds a creative way to clear cap room, or Larkin decides to broaden his list of acceptable destinations, this standoff could drag on well into the offseason.

The situation remains at a stalemate, with both sides seemingly dug in and no resolution on the horizon.
