So, what’s next?
Dylan Larkin maintains that he hopes to remain with the Detroit Red Wings beyond this season as his contract negotiations have gotten uncomfortably public.
The latest update also makes things awkward as Andy Strickland reports that Larkin is hoping to get an annual salary of $9 million on his next deal, but the best offer allegedly made by the Red Wings has been in the $8 million range.
Strickland adds that many are convinced Larkin won’t accept a trade to another club without an extension in place and he reportedly in no rush to leave Detroit. Larkin has a full no-trade clause this season.
In other words, this is getting messy.
The Wings’ captain is in the final year of a five-year, $30 million contract with Detroit. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
There have been speculations that general manager Steve Yzerman had offered Larkin an eight-year contract worth $64 million, but that’s still under what the captain is reportedly seeking.
It feels like a $1 million (per year) gap could be a big fork in the road.
Larkin remains hot amidst the trade rumours and contract stalemate… I guess the pressure on the Red Wings will get more intense as the March 3r trade deadline nears.
