Several interested teams are losing ground, and the reasons are telling.
The Dylan Larkin trade saga has dominated NHL headlines for weeks, sitting alongside the Connor Hellebuyck situation as one of the league’s most closely watched storylines. With Hellebuyck’s saga now in the books, the rumour mill continues to churn around the Detroit Red Wings’ former captain, and a clearer picture is emerging of which teams are in the running and which are quietly falling out of contention.
Philadelphia appears to be among the clubs on the outside looking in. According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, while some teams have been added to Larkin's trade list, they haven't all shown the same level of interest or fit. The Flyers, along with Boston and Utah, are reportedly fading as realistic destinations for the elite two-way centre.
LeBrun provided further detail on the Utah Mammoth's position, noting that while they are on Larkin's list and possess the assets to make a deal work, "they don't view that as a top priority pathway for them." Speaking on SportsCentre with Jay Onrait, he added that "Utah, I know, has talked to Detroit, but I don’t think Utah’s pushing too hard; they've got a million centres."
Tampa Bay also appears to be a non-factor. LeBrun told Melnick in the Afternoon that he hasn't heard "any connection between Tampa and Detroit on Dylan Larkin."
The teams generating the most positive buzz are the Minnesota Wild, who have been considered front-runners for some time, and the Montreal Canadiens, who are reportedly picking up steam. Montreal could enter the sweepstakes more seriously if Larkin adds them to his approved trade list.
The situation around Larkin's preferences has sparked significant debate among fans. Some have speculated that tax considerations play a role in his reluctance to move to certain markets, while others believe the intensity of certain fanbases factors into his thinking. None of those claims have been confirmed.
What is clear is that the field of realistic suitors is narrowing. For a Flyers team that could use a proven centre to anchor their lineup, the apparent lack of traction in the Larkin pursuit represents a missed opportunity, at least for now.
It remains a mystery where Larkin will end up when traded, and whether Minnesota can finalize a package that satisfies Detroit’s demands, or whether Montreal can make a late push to reshape the race entirely. Stay tuned…
