The Detroit Red Wings were fresh off a historic four-goal comeback victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, and were going up against a Buffalo Sabres team that had been unable to play or practice for a week thanks to a record-breaking winter storm in western New York.

However, the Sabres looked like world beaters against Detroit, taking advantage of some serious puck luck and questionable calls from the officials and racing out to a 5-0 lead over the visiting Red Wings. Just as they did the previous night, the Red Wings began mounting a comeback effort, getting a pair of goals from Dominik Kubalik as well as defenseman Jordan Oesterle, cutting Buffalo's lead to two and giving fans reason to have visions of another incredible comeback effort dance in their heads.

Unfortunately, Detroit's magic ran out, as Buffalo would hit the empty net to take a 6-3 lead, which would be the final score of the game. Despite another considerable pushback effort, the Red Wings won't like the fact that they once again fell into a major hole on the scoreboard early on.

"We just ran out of time," captain Dylan Larkin said in the locker room afterward. "We gave up too much early in the game and a lot of times we shot ourselves in the foot and didn't defend well enough, giving them easy chances."

"You try to push because we know we did it the night before, so there's no reason not to do it again," Kubalik said. "We had some scoring chances in the beginning, too, and we just didn't capitalize. A couple of mistakes ended up in our net, so we learned a little lesson."

The Red Wings will have a chance to get back on the winning side of things when they host the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night at Little Caesars Arena.
