Dylan Larkin’s Detroit standoff gets uglier as chaotic timeline is exposed

A timeline of Larkin's messy year in Detroit keeps getting worse.

It has been a season unlike any other for Dylan Larkin in Detroit, and not in a good way. What started with the forward professing his desire to remain a Red Wing for life has spiralled into one of the most chaotic player situations in recent NHL memory.

As hockey writer Pete Blackburn points out, the timeline of events this year paints a damning picture. Larkin reportedly began the year expressing loyalty to the organization, but after yet another missed playoff appearance, the tone shifted dramatically.

Larkin managed just one even-strength goal after the Olympics, a stat that underscores the on-ice frustrations that have defined his recent stretch in Detroit.

From there, things only escalated. Larkin demanded a trade, but with a narrow list limited to just the top three American contenders. He then lost the captaincy, a significant blow for a player who had long been the face of the franchise.

When training camp arrived, Larkin showed up reluctantly. He dodged meaningful questions from the media and was listed as injured, though Blackburn's use of quotation marks around the word suggested skepticism about the nature of that absence.

Larkin eventually returned to action, publicly stating his focus was on helping the team win games. But the olive branch did not last long. He since expanded his trade list from three to ten teams, though still limited to U.S. based contenders.

Then came Thursday, when Larkin publicly quit on his team for a second time this year, and was eventually suspended without pay by Detroit.

"Seems like a really easy guy to root for," Blackburn wrote sarcastically in his recap.

The post generated massive engagement online, with fans split on where to place blame. Some pointed out that Larkin still has multiple years remaining on a contract he willingly signed, making his stance harder to defend. Others pushed back, arguing that Detroit's front office has made a series of poor decisions that contributed to the dysfunction.

The Larkin saga shows no signs of a clean resolution with Detroit suspending its former captain and everyone else waiting for a trade to take place. Whether the Red Wings find a trade partner willing to meet the forward's demands or the two sides find some uneasy path forward, this situation has already left a mark on both the player's reputation and the franchise's direction this season.
