His wife gave birth to their third daughter during the first period of tonight's game in Montreal. And he put up three points in a big win!
Dylan Strome had an impressive performance in Montreal on Thursday, but it wasn't even the most impressive performance in the Strome family for the day.
Back home in Washington, D.C. Strome's wife Tayler Strome was giving birth to their third daughter, Sutton Kimberley Strome born during the 1st period of tonight's game between Strome's Washington Capitals and the home team Montreal Canadiens.
Dylan was in Montreal getting ready to take on the Canadiens when he got the call before puck drop from his wife Tayler telling him that she was going into labor. Strome and team management reportedly struggled to find effective transportation for him to get back home with his wife and the decision was made to play the game and then travel back with the team this evening.
As it turns out, Tayler's labor was short and she gave both just a couple hours after first going into labor. Again, she was born during the 1st period of tonight's game, a game in which Dylan put up 3 assists in an 8-4 walloping of the Habs.
"There was just so many emotions going through my mind,” he said, with tears running down his face. “First of all, you want to make sure everyone's OK, it's a pretty scary thing. At the time of the first period, I kind of thought I was going to make it home in time, maybe. Obviously, that didn't happen.”
Visibly crushed that he couldn't attend the birth of his daughter, Strome spoke passionately about the strength that Tayler showed throughout the ordeal.
“Really proud of her,” Strome said, pausing several times to compose himself. “It's tough, and you obviously want to be there for the birth of your children and didn't know it was coming this soon, but can't wait to go see her … It's something that I don't think I'll ever experience again, hopefully no one does, kind of just feeling helpless."
“We got two young ones at home, and she's taking care of both of them while I'm gone. I had to call in some reinforcements for her to go to the hospital. It's a crazy thing that definitely hockey was not really on my mind going out for the first period, but I got the call after the first that she was there. So it's incredible and I can't stress enough how super proud I am of her.”
