Easton Cowan sends message to Mitch Marner after tying his record.
Maple Leafs top prospect has a message for Mitch Marner after tying his record.
Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs who tuned in to last night's Memorial Cup showdown between the London Knights and Medicine Hat Tigers were treated to a little case of deja vu. That's because Maple Leafs top prospect Easton Cowan stole the show on Sunday when he not only became a Memorial Cup champion as a member of the Knights, but also repeated a little history in the process.
Cowan was named the Memorial Cup MVP on Sunday night, an award that was won 9 years earlier by Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner, and he did so by also tying a record set by Marner 9 years ago as well. Marner holds the franchise record for the most Memorial Cup points by any player in London Knights history, a record that he now shares with Cowan who finished with 15 points just like Marner had done 9 years ago.
It was an incredible moment for Cowan who acknowledged that fact when he admitted that Marner was a player he idolized.
"Yeah it means a lot," admitted Cowan on Sunday. "He's the player I grew up watching and he's a super special player and a super special person for sure."
Cowan even acknowledged during the interview that he would definitely be sending a little message Marner's way after tying his record on Sunday night.
"I'll send a text about that one for sure," said Cowan with the smile audible in his voice.
History does have a way of repeating itself and this proved to be a special case of that for the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans, and of course Easton Cowan himself.
