Classy move by Jay Woodcroft.
Edmonton Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft earned himself a lot of fans on Saturday night when he did something that I don't believe you would see a great many coaches do in the National Hockey League.
The Oilers were put in something of an awkward situation on Saturday night when they were forced to sign amateur goaltender Matt Berlin of the University of Alberta on an emergency basis. Berlin was signed to an amateur tryout offer due to the fact that Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner came down with an illness, one that would prevent him from suiting up for Saturday night's game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
That left the Oilers with Jack Campbell as their only goaltender, meaning that they needed someone to sit on the bench in the event that Campbell was unable to complete the game. Campbell though would have himself a solid night as the Oilers dominated and there was no need for Berlin to step out onto the ice... that is until the final minutes of the game.
Knowing that his team was in full control of the game, Woodcroft took a risk and put Berlin out on the ice to give the young man his moment in the National Hockey League. It is a story that Berlin will no doubt be sharing for the rest of his life, and it was all made possible thanks to the quick thinking and kind heart of the Oilers head coach.
