At least one Winnipeg Jets player did everything he could to prevent the St. Louis Blues from winning pivotal Game 5.

In the last minute of the third period, as both team stood with two goals apiece, Nikolaj Ehlers unselfishly threw himself in front of Colton Parayko and right away looked in severe pain as the puck crashed against his leg. However, the Blues remained menacing and Ehlers wanted to save his team from another late-goal comeback by St. Louis.

After sacrificing his body, Ehlers forced himself to get up and play the puck to get it away from the zone. Finally, the puck was covered by his goalie Connor Hellebuyck and the star forward was able to get off the ice with 45 seconds to go.

It’s too bad for Ehlers that his team was not able to hang in there to force overtime.

Jaden Schwartz scored with 15 seconds remaining in the third period, lifting the Blues to a 3-2 victory over the Jets and handing St. Louis a 3-2 series lead in their Western Conference quarterfinal.

Ehlers must have heard the goal and the crowd’s reaction as he stood on the medical table for help.

Heartbreaking.
