Vancouver Canucks star forward Elias Pettersson is in the middle of a three-year contract he signed on the eve of the 2021-22 season. However, his agent Pat Brisson is already looking as his client, who setting up for quite the raise with his play this season.

Pettersson, who wore an A on his chest during last night’s matchup against the Lightning in Tampa Bay, has collected 18 goals and 50 goals in 39 contests so far in 2022-23. Last night, he played a team-leading 21:59 of ice time among forwards en route to tallying a goal and an assist.

Pettersson will be a restricted free agent in the summer of 2024 and Brisson comments on his client’s future in Vancouver, per Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal.

“Elias loves Vancouver, he hates losing. July 1st we can discuss and explore a contract with Vancouver and we will.”

“The plan was at the time to explore what we could do with the cap space,” Brisson said of negotiating Pettersson’s current deal at a $7.35 AAV to the Province earlier this week.

The agent also represents defenseman Quinn Hughes, who signed a contract at the same time but went three years longer on his deal, at a7.85 million AAV.

“I always tell players if you do sign a shorter-term deal you do expand your options,” Brisson added.

When the deal for Pettersson was made, the plan in Vancouver was to build themselves into a contender. And while the plan remains the same for the Canucks, it remains to be seen if Pettersson sees it as clearly when negotiations come around.
