The top insider in the National Hockey League was at the center of some controversy over the weekend after he appeared to signal boost a controversial tweet involving a toddler.

The tweet in question was a meme featuring a very unhappy young toddler and some profane language, with the toddler being depicted in a situation where he was being bullied by his adult parents. It was something that didn't sit well with some, and many were quick to point out that the image had been shared by Friedman in a retweet.

You can see the tweet in question below:

The retweet from Friedman was quickly taken down but we would have to wait until Monday morning to hear the hilarious story about what happened from the man himself. On Monday, Friedman appeared on his usual podcast and owned the mistake, saying that it had been a complete accident.

"I was typing something and I thought I was typing a text message, but somehow I got on to the For You page on X and I guess there are shortcuts," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "If you hit certain buttons a new tweet can come up or evidently you can retweet something. I had NO idea I did it."

While this would be funny enough on it's own, how Friedman realized his mistake might be even funnier.

"I got a text from a coach in the NHL," revealed Friedman. "That was the first one. And I was like 'What? What is he saying to me' I didn't get it."

The thought of an NHL coach letting Friedman know about his flub is almost unbelievable, especially with Friedman not realizing what was going on. However Friedman quickly realized when dozens upon dozens of other messages started to flood in.

"The first one I saw was from some Rangers fan who said 'Elliotte why did you retweet this?'" said Friedman no longer able to contain his laughter. "I started to figure it out."

Friedman continued to reveal that he was teased by his friends about whose phone the tweet may have landed on, including the likes of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, which Friedman took in stride and even laughed about himself.

The reaction from his colleagues on the Hockey Night in Canada panel was exactly what you would expect as well.

"I went over there to show it to them and when they started to realize it they laughed just as hard as everybody else did," admitted Friedman.
