Months of speculation surrounding the two hockey personalities have finally come to an end.
Sportsnet is gearing up for what it calls its most ambitious NHL broadcast season yet, with over 550 nationally available games and 150 regional blackouts being lifted for the 2026-27 campaign. But the biggest talking point emerging from the network's announcement isn't the game count. It's the confirmation that two of hockey media's most recognizable personalities are staying put.
Elliotte Friedman and Kevin Bieksa will both be part of Sportsnet's brand new Saturday Night Hockey broadcast, which is set to debut on October 3. They will be joined by Ron MacLean and Colby Armstrong on the Saturday night panel.
The news effectively ends months of quiet speculation about the futures of both Friedman and Bieksa at the network. Fan reaction on social media was swift, with viewers expressing relief and excitement that the popular duo had re-signed with Sportsnet.
Saturday Night Hockey is not the only new programming on the slate. Monday Night Hockey will also return on October 5, featuring David Amber, Luke Gazdic, and Justin Williams. In a notable shift, Monday Night Hockey will stream exclusively on Sportsnet+ this season, marking a continued push toward the network's digital platform.
The broader schedule is headlined by NHL Opening Night on September 29, with coverage beginning at 6:30 PM ET. Sportsnet says the removal of 150 blackouts will give Canadian fans more national access to games than ever before.
For Friedman, widely regarded as one of the most connected insiders in the sport, the return ensures continuity for viewers who have come to rely on his reporting and analysis during broadcasts and on his popular 32 Thoughts platform. Bieksa, meanwhile, has carved out a niche as one of the most entertaining and candid analysts on Canadian hockey television since his retirement from playing.
The pairing of the two alongside MacLean and Armstrong gives Sportsnet a strong foundation for its new Saturday night flagship show, which will compete for attention in a crowded hockey media landscape.
We cannot wait for the start of the campaign when the new lineups and programming will face their first real test with pucks dropping across the league.
