After losing last night to the Seattle Kraken, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ losing streak has reached six straight games. It’s been tough to watch and now rumours have emerged that the team might put up the sale sign ahead of the trade deadline.

But, despite a challenging season, Auston Matthews remains steadfast in his commitment to the Maple Leafs. Insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed that Matthews isn’t expected to be involved in any trade discussions, even if the Leafs enter a phase where selling becomes an option.

“He made a long-term commitment to Toronto a few years ago, and even with a tough season, he isn’t interested in breaking that commitment,” Friedman said. “I don’t think Auston is going anywhere. I don’t think he has a desire to go anywhere.”

Matthews’ loyalty gives Leafs fans some reassurance amid speculation, but the reality is that Toronto may soon open discussions on other roster pieces.

As the March 6 trade deadline approaches, general manager Brad Treliving could evaluate options among players who are pending unrestricted or restricted free agents.

Names such as Nic Roy and Oliver Ekman-Larsson could start appearing in trade chatter, Friedman noted. “Would they be available? I think, you know, that’s going to be a question. I think we’re going to start to hear over the next little while about what Toronto is willing to do.”

For now, it sounds like Matthews is staying put, but the Leafs could still shake up the roster as they assess their playoff window and future strategy.

While fans won’t see their star leave (yet?), they may witness key changes elsewhere that could redefine Toronto’s season leading into the Olympic break and the trade deadline.
