Columbus's veteran netminder had shoulder surgery with no return timeline as training camp looms.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are less than a month away from opening training camp, and they're already dealing with a significant question mark between the pipes. The club announced on Thursday that goaltender Elvis Merzlikins underwent surgery earlier in the week, leaving his availability for the start of the 2026-27 season very much in doubt.
Merzlikins, 32, went under the knife on Monday to repair an injured shoulder. According to Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell, the Latvian netminder flagged discomfort in his shoulder a few weeks ago while going through his offseason training regimen. An MRI followed, and the medical team determined that surgery was the best path forward. The procedure was deemed successful, but there is no timetable for his return.
"He'll be evaluated again in a few weeks at which time we'll have a clearer idea on when he will be back on the ice," Waddell said in a statement.
Merzlikins is entering the final year of a five-year, $27 million deal that carries a $5.4 million cap hit. He's set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, which makes the timing of this surgery particularly notable. Last season wasn't exactly a banner year for him either. He posted a 14-11-3 record with a 3.40 goals-against average and an .883 save percentage in 30 appearances, splitting duties with Jet Greaves.
Over the course of his career in Columbus, Merzlikins has been a steady if sometimes inconsistent presence. He's appeared in 274 regular season games since his NHL debut in 2019-20, compiling a 108-111-38 record with a 3.22 GAA, .900 save percentage, and 12 shutouts. Those numbers place him second in franchise history behind Sergei Bobrovsky in wins, saves, and goaltender games played. He also has a small but impressive playoff sample, going 1-1 with a 1.96 GAA and .946 save percentage in two postseason outings.
The Blue Jackets clearly anticipated the possibility that Merzlikins might not be ready to go, or at least that they needed more depth. Columbus signed veteran Pheonix Copley to a one-year, $850,000 contract on July 1. If Merzlikins isn't healthy by the time the regular season rolls around, the plan figures to be Greaves as the starter with Copley serving as the backup.
Columbus has now missed the playoffs for six straight seasons, and last year's 40-30-12 record showed some signs of progress even if it wasn't enough to end the drought. The club is set to open training camp on September 16 with on-ice workouts beginning the following day. The preseason kicks off on September 21 against the Detroit Red Wings, and the regular season opener is slated for October 1 at Nationwide Arena against the Buffalo Sabres.
For a team trying to take the next step, losing your most experienced goaltender for an indefinite stretch is far from ideal. The hope will be that the few-weeks evaluation window gives some positive news, but for now, the Blue Jackets are heading into camp preparing as though Merzlikins won't be there. How Greaves and Copley handle the workload early on could go a long way in shaping Columbus's season.
