Embattled Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton sounds off on pressure he's facing

Colliton's seat continues to get warmer.

Needless to say, this isn't the start that the Chicago Blackhawks envisioned when they began the 2021-22 NHL Season.

There were several moves made prior to the puck dropping last week within the organization. Gone are the likes of defensive mainstay Duncan Keith and (on paper, though his playing career is over) Brent Seabrook, who were both dealt over the summer. Arriving into the Windy City are the likes of Seth Jones, Jake McCabe, Tyler Johnson, Marc-Andre Fleury, Caleb Jones, and Jujhar Khaira.

Oh, and of course, the return of captain Jonathan Toews to the ice after dealing with an illness that kept him out of the lineup last season.

But following last night's setback at home to the Vancouver Canucks, the Blackhawks sit at 0-4-1. Fleury hasn't looked anything like the Vezina Trophy winner of last season, while defenseman Seth Jones is having a poor start to his multi-year tenure.

Meanwhile, head coach Jeremy Colliton continues to feel his seat get warmer. He's feeling the pressure, and he alluded to it last night following the loss to the Canucks.

“It’s always there," he said of the pressure. "There was pressure from the first day I got here. It’s up to us and it’s up to me to find a new way to give these guys what they need to perform at their highest level. And it’s the same job every day.”

GM Stan Bowman was asked point blank last month during training camp regarding Colliton's job security, and he wasn't exactly committal.

“Pressure’s always there. When you’re in the National Hockey League, we’re all evaluated all the time.”

He added: “We’re still going to be a really young team, but I think we’re going to be a deeper team.”

But so far, it hasn't translated to on-ice success. So what does Colliton think is going through his boss' mind at the moment?

“Tough for me to speak for him, right? But everyone’s frustrated,” Colliton said. “We want to break through, we think we have a good team. But we’ve got to get that first one and then it’s an opportunity to build.”
