Engineer introduces brand new “uncage” goalie mask design

Could this be a design we might see a professional wear in the future?

The hockey goaltender's mask has certainly evolved over the past several decades from the rudimentary fiberglass design infamously donned by Jacques Plante, who in 1959 became the first NHL goalie to regularly wear the protective face shield.

And while most goaltenders are creatures of habit and would be wary of attempting something new, one particular engineer has his eyes set on changing things with a brand new mask cage that features better visibility thanks to bars that are 5x thinner than a traditional cat-eye mask.

The engineer is Surjan Singh, who has dreams of one day seeing his new mask cage prototype worn by a professional.

From Singh himself::

"My design was inspired by bullet proof vests. If you’re interested in reading the whole story from design to product, start with Part 1 of my twenty part series, “An Inventor’s Quest for the NHL”.

Help me realize my dream! I’m trying to find an NHL and PWHPA goalie to help me finish developing the uncage. To do that, I’d appreciate you forwarding this post to anyone who might know a goalie in those leagues. It could be someone in sports media, a hockey fan, or even just a Canadian."
