Bo Horvat may be playing the best hockey of his nine-season career, his Vancouver Canucks aren’t going as well. As well as Horvat has been playing, it would be hard on the Canucks if they traded, however, it might be best for the team to move him as he’s become their best trade chip.

On the air of Vancouver’s Sportsnet 650 radio earlier this week, team President Jim Rutherford even mentioned how Horvat could eventually find himself on the trade block.

“I hope we can we sign him but if we can’t sign him the better we play the better return we can get for him.”

That’s because Horvat is a pending unrestricted free agent at the end of this season and he has been playing his way into a significant raise over his current $5.5 million cap hit.

Trade chatter is growing and on Thursday, it was TSN’s Mike Johnson dreaming up a trade proposal that got people talking.

Johnson suggested that the Canucks pull another trade with the Hurricanes to send Horvat in Carolina. That would give the Hurricanes an Aho-Horvat-Staal 1-2-3 punch down the middle, and you have to admit that’s just a perfect fit for a team looking to go all the way this season.

There weren’t rumblings on what the Canucks could seek in return for Horvat if they were to entertain a deal with the Hurricanes. However, the Canucks would almost certainly receive multiple high picks and/or top prospects for Horvat. It is also obvious that Vancouver has significant roster needs, specifically on defense and could seek return to to build a younger, stronger backend for the foreseeable future.

But there is no doubt that Horvat is the best trade chip on hand in Vancouver. He’s posted 12 goals through the Canucks’ first 14 games and is on pace to for more as he has scored more than 40 goals over his last 82 games.

While Johnson might love to see Horvat in Carolina, this epic trade proposal might not take place, but it is certain that any move involving the Canucks’ captain will be a blockbuster.
