Kane speaks to the media following his horrible injury.
The National Hockey League unfortunately experienced one of it's most gruesome injuries in years this week when Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane suffered a deep cut during a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
It was one of the most genuinely terrifying scenes we've had to witness in the sport of hockey in quite some time and as a result many fans were genuinely concerned about Kane's well being, both in the short and the long term following the horrible injury.
On Friday, members of the media finally got a chance to catch up with the Oilers star forward and ask him about his recent and rather unpleasant experience and Kane was surprisingly in good spirits throughout the whole thing. In spite of the fact that he will be recovering for a long time, Kane was candid in his answers when discussing the frightening incident.
"I remember a lot," admitted Kane when asked what he remembered from the incident. "I kinda got taken down there and I just remember feeling something hit my wrist and then immediately I just saw blood shoot out."
Kane would reveal that the cut had gone right down to the bone, and so it wasn't surprising to hear him admit that he knew things were bad as soon as he saw how seriously he had been sliced by the skate of Tampa Bay Lightning forward Pat Maroon.
"When I looked down I could see what was going and I knew I was in trouble and needed some help immediately."
Thankfully, in spite of what must have been a panic-inducing moment, Kane acted quickly and tried to stop the bleeding as much as he could while running back into the locker room.
"It just shot up, the blood, immediately," said Kane. "I just tried to put my hand over it and squeeze it as hard as I could and once I got to the bench and the room the doctor's and the training staff kind of took over."
When asked about how frightening the moment was for him, Kane admitted that he feared for his life when he saw all the blood he was losing.
"Yeah at first you're thinking when you see that much blood, I've never seen that much blood before," admitted Kane. "First thing is 'I don't wanna bleed out here.'"
When asked about the nature of his injury, Kane had no problem admitting that things were actually quite bad.
"I cut pretty much everything down to the bone," said Kane. "I got really lucky that they were able to reattach everything, they actually took a vein from a different part of my arm to reattach things."
When asked about his future Kane admitted that there was still a lot of things up in the air for him, with plenty of meetings with doctors ahead during his projected 3-4 months of recovery from this awful injury.
"Not really sure," said Kane. "I don't know what the plan is, I know I see a doctor on Wednesday but other than that just kind of taking it day by day."
