Evander Kane ignites new firestorm on X at the worst possible time

Kane, currently an unrestricted free agent still searching for a contract after a terrible season with the Vancouver Canucks, responded on X to a Fox News report about the U.S. Senate Homeland Security Committee voting to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress. According to the report, the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during his hearing.

The forward shared his thoughts without much hesitation. He wrote that it was absurd to believe "someone else's injection was supposed to protect someone who didn't get one" and mocked those who held that position. He also took aim at the media, accusing outlets of amplifying and enforcing a particular narrative while silencing dissenting voices.

The post quickly racked up over 1.3 million views and thousands of interactions, drawing sharp responses from both supporters and critics.

Journalist Jimmy Murphy was among the first from the hockey world to push back, tying Kane's on-ice reputation to his off-ice commentary. "Imagine being one of the most overrated hockey players ever and then saying this," Murphy wrote.

Sportsnet's Mark Spector also chimed in, retweeting Kane's post and calling it a selfish take. That exchange escalated quickly. Kane fired back at Spector in the middle of the night, calling the journalist's response idiotic and referencing a past confrontation between the two.

"I would say more but you might start crying like you did when I gave you a talking to outside the locker room. Don't tell me you forgot," Kane wrote.

Others pushed back on Kane's claims directly, with several users arguing that his post misrepresented decades of vaccine science and conflated imperfect protection with no protection at all.

The timing of the entire episode is hard to ignore. Kane remains unsigned heading into August, and stirring up political controversy on social media is unlikely to help his case with prospective teams evaluating both his on-ice value and off-ice baggage.
