The Canucks’ winger remains on the block, but suitors appear hesitant.
Evander Kane remains on the trade market, but despite months of interest, the Vancouver Canucks’ right winger has yet to find a new home. The 34-year-old’s agent was allowed to speak with other clubs to facilitate a deal, and the Dallas Stars were reportedly among the teams checking in.
Lia Assimakopoulos of The Dallas Morning News however noted that while the Stars are searching for a top-six winger, a better fit could be Calgary Flames’ Blake Coleman, a native of Plano, Texas. Other rumored interest included the Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche, though little has emerged in recent days.
The Canucks have been shopping Kane for months and are reportedly willing to retain a portion of his $5.125-million cap hit to make the contract more manageable for a contending team. Vancouver is believed to be seeking at least a third-round pick in return. The idea of sending Kane back to Edmonton was reportedly explored but quickly dismissed by Oilers sources.
Kane’s on-ice production hasn’t helped his trade value. In 55 games this season, he has nine goals and 25 points, well below expectations for a player in the final year of his contract. For any team considering him, Kane would be a pure rental addition, offering toughness, playoff experience, and a veteran presence, but not the scoring boost a top-six winger typically provides.
As the NHL trade deadline approaches, Kane’s status remains uncertain, and it appears he may once again be passed over in favor of younger or higher-producing alternatives.
