The controversial forward has fans worried about his first season in Vancouver after a summer move that’s raising eyebrows.
Back in June, the Edmonton Oilers traded forward Evander Kane to the Vancouver Canucks in return for a fourth round pick in this year’s draft. Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin was immediately met with a lot of backlash from fans once the move was announced and even had to make a statement to explain why he had given a chance to a controversial player like Kane, who always ends up in hot water for one reason or another.
“The past is the past,” said Allvin of Kane, who noted that in his estimation Kane has matured the past few years in Edmonton.
“This gives us and gives him an opportunity to see if this is a long-term fit,” and added that he’s hoping that it is.
But fans have not been reassured and things only got worse for Kane over the weekend when he was spotted playing in a beer league after a post went viral on X, prompting fans to worry and criticize Kane saying he could injure himself and miss action.
Injuries plagued the Canucks last year, with some of their best players missing significant time. And let’s not forget Kane missed the entire regular season last year before returning in time for the playoffs, in which he posted six goals and 12 points in 21 games. He had played through injury most of the 2023-24 season, and still led the Oilers in hits while scoring 24 goals.
Kane, who was donning No. 25 in the game, was wearing his Oilers gloves, but he had Canucks pant shells on. He ended the amateur contest with two goals and four points in what was an 8-3 win for the Broadstreet Bullies, the same team which he suited up for numerous games back in the summer 2023.
As for last summer, he had underwent surgery to repair two torn hip adductor muscles, two hernias and two torn lower abdominal muscles in September, as well has getting surgery in January. Fans are right to be worried: Kane is no stranger to injuries.
It is common for NHLers to play summer hockey, but fans in Vancouver are feeling that Kane should not risk his first season with the Canucks playing in a summer beer league with non-professional players, especially with his history.
With the Canucks depending on him to be fully healthy for the upcoming season, fans are saying that suiting up for a beer-league team is not worth the gamble…
Also being such a controversial player, Kane was doomed as soon as he stepped on the ice for the beer-league team and now keeps hearing about it all over social media.
