This has to be the most awkward NHL Draft in history. In the past, everyone would convene in one place. This time, 93 prospects will gather at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theater with teams staying in their home cities.

The prospects that were selected in the first round were then connected in a virtual meeting to their new teams and general managers in the “NHL Draft House”, and it was … strange.

It felt like the NHL thought hey let’s make every young draftee feel so awkward that every other interview for the rest of his life will seem easy…

Many comments as such have been trending on social media, and no one seems to enjoy the decentralized draft.

On top of the ridiculous setting for the draftees, the draft is taking forever, with too many special guests and pauses.

Fans, pundits and even insiders are complaining online:

As expected the New York Islanders selected defenseman Matthew Schaefer with the No. 1 pick. It was an emotional scene for everyone at the Live’s Peacock Theater and quite frankly the only good thing coming out of this draft.

It was also very moving to see Meredith Gaudreau on the stage to announce the Columbus Blue Jackets' 14th overall pick. The fans gave her a standing ovation and they all started chanting Johnny. Meredith also thanked every single team and every single fanbase for their support last season.

She also made the 20th pick for the Blue Jackets, selecting goalie Pyotr Andreyanov.

If not...

Please let this be the last time the NHL goes for a decentralized draft.
