Evgeni Malkin crosschecks Mark Borowiecki in the face.
Not a fun night to be the Predators defenseman.
The Nashville Predators' Mark Borowiecki is having himself a tough night against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. The veteran defenseman had a rough outing in the game's second period, getting banged up both midway through the period and again in the closing moments of the period courtesy of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin.
The two teams were tied up with one goal each and as Borowiecki and Malkin battled each other with no time left remaining on the game clock, Malkin would let his frustration with Borowiecki get the better of him. The Penguins star forward began by delivering a pretty solid chop to Borowiecki with his stick and, when the Predators defenseman approached him to retaliate, Malkin would follow that up with another use of the stick with a crosscheck to the face of Borowiecki.
It was enough to leave the 32 year old busted open and it would earn Malkin a double minor, a ruling by the National Hockey League's officiating crew that members of the broadcast speculated could be reviewed by the Department of Player Safety. Officially Malkin was awarded 4 minutes for a high sticking infraction, although that seems like a charitable way to interpret his actions. The broadcast also confirmed that the officials on the ice reviewed the call of a double minor between periods and upheld that original call following that review.
