It all started on Monday night when Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov made headlines again with his game-winning shootout goal against the Calgary Flames. The Russian forward used his trademark shootout move, going super slow on Jacob Markström and has now many experts wondering if his slow approach should not be allowed.

Former referee Tim Peel, who left the game under very controversial circumstances, has since been quite vocal about the game on social media and has now called out Kuznetsov for making a mockery of the game, asking Colin Campbell and the Department of Hockey Ops to take a closer look at this approach and make changes.

“This was not the intention when the shootout was brought in. Plays like this make a mockery of our game. The next time he does this the goalie should charge and rip his head off!”

I understand that the slow move, especially how Kuznetsov pulls it, goes against the spirit of the game with its intensity and speed. However, I get how players might be looking to send the message that shootouts are boring and have been around for way too long. Fans and even some players have been adamant that a 10-minute overtime should come as the extra time during a tie game : some are even suggesting tie games should left alone in the record.

Where do you stand on this?
