A once blossoming National Hockey League star has hit a new low in his professional hockey career and you do have to wonder if this might be the end of the road.

On Saturday morning, in an official announcement from the Kontinental Hockey League, it was revealed that former Washington Capitals star forward Evgeny Kuznetsov was being placed on waivers by his current team, Metallurg Magnitogorsk. The move comes after Kuznetsov had been previously made a healthy scratch in December due to his poor play, with his team seemingly now feeling as though they have to take more extreme measures.

Kuznetsov is in his first season with Metallurg Magnitogorsk but has appeared in just 15 games for the team, scoring 1 goal and adding 8 assists for a total of 9 points.

The expectation is that if Kuznetsov clears waivers he will have to report to Salavat Yulaev Ufa, a team that plays in a lower tier of the KHL.

Kuznetsov appeared destined to become one of the NHL's brightest stars during his time with the Washington Capitals, having perhaps his best season during the 2017-18 NHL season where he had 27 goals and 56 assists for 83 points in the regular season despite playing in just 79 games. Kuznetsov and the Capitals would capture the Stanley Cup that same season, but things would go downhill from there.

In 2019 Kuznetsov was banned by the IIHF after he tested positive for cocaine, a decision that followed a highly controversial viral video in which Kuznetsov was seen in a room with white powder on the table.

Kuznetsov would never regain that level of form and was eventually traded by the Capitals to the Carolina Hurricanes where he would only last 20 games before moving back to the KHL.

Hopefully this latest stumble for Kuznetsov will serve as a wakeup call.
