It’s no secret that the Edmonton Oilers are actively looking to improve their goaltending ahead of the 2025-26 season.

According to Jeff Marek, the team that has lost the last two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals tried to acquire Arturs Silovs from the Canucks earlier this month. However, Vancouver opted to trade the goalie to the Pittsburgh Penguins rather than to a rival within the Pacific Division.

But there could be another option for Edmonton somewhere out East.

The host of The Sheet podcast pointed out that there’s “another situation similar to Silovs” in the NHL, and it’s taking place in Boston.

There are similarities with the situation involving Silovs in Vancouver and what’s going on with the Bruins and goaltender Michael DiPietro. Just like Silovs, the 26-year-old netminder is performing exceptionally well in the American Hockey League, but remains stuck behind other goalies in his team’s depth chart.

DiPietro has been part of the Bruins’ organization since October 2022, having been acquired in a trade with the Canucks. However, he has yet to play in the NHL with Boston, though he did appear in three games for Vancouver earlier in his career.

In 40 games with the Providence Bruins during the 2024–2025 season, the Ontario native posted a 26-8-5 record, a .927 save percentage, and a goals-against average of 2.05.

Marek strongly believes that, after losing out on Silovs, the Oilers should go after DiPietro.

“There’s another Silovs situation happening in the NHL; in Boston, with Michael DiPietro; I just wanted to put lob that out there for Oilers fans; you might not have got your Artus Silovs, but you may get a Michael DiPietro.”
