Failed trade for Casey DeSmith as Habs desperately attempt to move him!

On the move again!?

Last month, goalie Casey DeSmith was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens in the three-way trade that saw Erik Karlsson leave the San Jose Sharks to head to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Habs general manager Kent Hughes was able to flip a piece of that trade, trading defenseman Jeff Petry to the Detroit Red Wings.

However, Hughes hasn’t had the same success with DeSmith. And it isn’t for the lack of trying.

According to Jonathan Bernier of the Journal de Montreal, the Canadiens were confident they would be able to ship out DeSmith just a couple of days following the Petry trade to Detroit. But the deal fell through and nothing has happened since.

Now Hughes might have to go back on his word to DeSmith:

“I told Casey to be patient, the goal is not to bury you in the American Hockey League. We will continue to look at possible trades or to make some changes. But it’ll take patience with the goalie market, it’s always slow.”

Hughes is now left in a rather difficult situation as he is stuck with three goalies, with his well-known preference to use Samuel Montembault and Jake Allen during the NHL season.

And there isn’t anything much better to say about the goalie market, with returns on netminders quite limited, to say the least. Most teams don’t need another goaltender, especially at the moment with training camps around the block, and if they do, they aren’t interested in paying top dollar…

Hughes might have to break his promise to DeSmith and “bury” him in Laval in the AHL…
