Fans in Detroit it would seem are rapidly losing faith in the plan set forth by Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman, a plan that has been coined as the "Yzerplan" by fans and pundits alike.

Yzerman has preached patience since he inherited an admittedly less than ideal situation after former Red Wings general manager Ken Holland was ushered out the door in Detroit but, despite the uphill battle that Yzerman faced at the time, fans of the Red Wings have had their patience sorely tested in recent years.

The Red Wings have had 3 different head coaches during Yzerman's tenure including former Red Wings head coaches Jeff Blashill and Derek Lalonde and more recently Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan. Regardless of who has been leading the charge from behind the bench however the end result has remained the same, with the Red Wings missing the playoffs for 9 consecutive seasons.

Yzerman's tenure has also been marred by questionable signings and even more questionable trades, something that bubbled up to the surface again this week when Yzerman's most recent signing was announced. The Red Wings officially announced on Friday that they had come to terms on a new deal with veteran defenseman Travis Hamonic, a player that has been heavily criticized in recent years for his struggles on the blue line.

To say that the reception to the news from the Red Wings fan base was poor would be a massive understatement:

One fan even compared this to the addition of defenseman Justin Holl, a move that has been heavily criticized since Yzerman signed Holl to a 3-year deal in the summer of 2023.

This is not merely a case of Red Wings fans being bitter either, with fans of the Ottawa Senators, the team Hanonic most recently played for, also poking fun at the signing from the Red Wings.

This is of course all exacerbated by the fact that Yzerman made one of the most baffling trades in recent National Hockey League history when he dealt a perfectly serviceable defenseman in Jake Walman to the San Jose Sharks. Not only did Yzerman deal Walman to the Sharks, but gave up an additional second round pick in that trade while receiving nothing at all in return.

The Sharks would go on to trade Walman themselves but didn't have to give up any assets to do so, instead they received a first round pick as well as a forward prospect in Carl Berglund. Walman proved to be a key contributor in the Oilers run to the Stanley Cup Final following that trade, scoring 2 goals and adding 8 assists for 10 points over 22 playoff games.

It is getting harder and harder to blame fans in the city of Detroit for being frustrated with the direction of their hockey team, and I suppose the only question left to ask is do you still trust in the Yzerplan?
